James McKay joined Quirk Cape Town our Managing Director in April 2011 where he quickly acquired the nickname, MmmmKay (thanks, Rob!).
James has always been passionate about writing, communication and people. His passion eventually led him to Rhodes University where he dived into a Bachelor of Journalism and followed it up with a Masters in Political Philosophy.
James started his ad career at Ogilvy and before joining our team, led the fast-paced Don Draper lifestyle in a more traditional space as Client Service Director at JWT. When he saw the opportunity to create the future; he turned his attention to Quirk and the digital realm… and it was love at first site sight.
James’ strength lies in developing ideas and effective creativity and working with clients to establish channel agnostic, brand-idea platforms. This stems from simple insights that move us all – and James sees marketing as a wonderful mix of science and intuition. After all, you can’t just think it; you have to feel it too.
He enjoys Memeburn and the stinking satire of the Onion News Network, but would choose to spend his ideal day off on an outdoorsy mountain bike trail. MmmmKay calls it like it is – he’s blatantly honest, allergic to bullshit, decidedly driven with just the right amount of silly.
He’s also a family-first fella, with a menagerie of adoptees including 3 cats, 1 dog and 4 fish. There’s also a rumour this chocolate-loving ad man can sing like an angel. Serenade àla McKay, anyone?
“Letting go is winning.”
